Kelly, I actually thought about this. To me, "headache" used this way iought to be okay because it's nonclinical. But your, and your friend's, metaphors may vary. :)

You know that works both ways. Not only can we all work at choosing our words carefully when we know we are truly ignorant, but we can also work at being patient and forgiving when someone else is a "jerk" out of ignorance. I do try to give people the benefit of the doubt, rather than letting it get under my skin.

I do suffer from migraines, and I used to have a boss who would complain in the afternoon that she was getting a migraine. I would look at her and think, "how are you still sitting upright with your eyes open then? eh?" I never said it, but it was annoying, if for no other reason than, because if she could work through the thing she called a "migraine" how could she be understanding when I called in sick with one?

I am familiar with the cultural ignorance surrounding diabetes (particularly type 1 vs. type 2 and all the misunderstandings there) But I'm more familiar with the misunderstandings surrounding home schooling and gifted kids. People say horrifically dismissive things about gifted kids in particular. I've gotten pretty used to it, and most of the time it rolls off my back. Other times, I feel the need to educate. Now that my daughter has diabetes as well as my husband, I suspect my defenses will be all the faster to rise into the red. We shall see.

Bob, I have type 1 diabetes. One of my coworkers frequently likes to say her blood sugar is a little low in the afternoon when she is feeling foggy. I always smile, and maybe her sugar is a little low--but still in normal range. One of these days I am afraid I will say something like, "You want to try a low? Try 38 at 3am. That's low." That's what your migraine comment meant me think of. Nice post.
